Leisure range cookers have always been associated with affordable quality. Price speaking, they tend to come in at around the midrange mark for cookers that are actually going to last: ovens that will do their job for a decade without crumbling into useless hunks of rust. In keeping with modern style ethics, the new batch of Leisure range cookers has a distinct mark of the past stamped on it: mostly, the Leisure range cooker in this current crop looks like something you might find in an expensive doll's house. There's a kind of retro 50s tinge to the Leisure cookers, which seems fairly common these days: perhaps due to the prevailing modern dissatisfaction with disposability and plastic awfulness.
Not to mention, of course, the fact that everything in the modern world, as now-reforming band Blur (another victim of the modern cry for anything that reminds us of better times) attested 20 years ago, is rubbish. Leisure range cookers are jumping on a bandwagon with their intentionally 1950s oriented looks – but then so is everyone else, and frankly it's a much better aspect than the frightful white pap we've been forced to buy in recent years.
Design has been a big word in the kitchen appliances industry over the last few years. Gone are the rust-spotted old tanks that lurk in kitchen corners smelling of grease; vanished, those lethal glowing mosquito-coil type hobs that served no real purpose other than melting little Johnny's fingers when he tried to steal some cake mix. In, instead, we've seen glittering chrome, the smoked glass and orange "car window" lines of the retro-80s microwave: and the rich bowler hat blacks of ovens designed, for some reason, to remind us of butlers. As the 90s ended and the Noughties gathered pace, we've seen further turns on Design Alley, including (finally) some rather lovely kitsch cookers that blend the best of the old school with the functionality of the new: though often at appalling prices. Now, we've arrived at Decade 2 of the new millennium – and a range of Leisure cookers that has managed to capture the best bits of new design without its terrifying price tags.
That said, there's a model in the new strand of Leisure range cookers that stands out from the crowd by not looking like your Nan's cooker: the fearsomely-named EB10CRX, which not only sounds like something out of the Terminator movies, but looks like a piece of the bridge of the starship Enterprise. Boldly going where no cooker has gone before (since the 80s, anyway), this particular Leisure range cooker is a masterpiece of chunky brushed aluminium, flat surfaces and smoked glass doors, retailing (if you know where to look) for the astonishingly affordable price of £600. Given the acknowledged reliability of Leisure cookers, that's like actually going back in time and buying a top of the range piece of kit at genuine 30 year ago prices. And if that isn't a stroke of marketing genius, we'd very much like to know what is.
