How to replace a pot on a guitar tone?
I just bought a guitar with no tone pot, everything else is intact. I need to know how to install a new tone pot and what kind of tone pot should get. Are your pots certain tone? Preferred brands? (I would go with DiMarzio) Should I be OHMS worried about? Please someone let me know everything about my situation. Thanks
First, are you a hand with a soldering iron? Unless so, whether they practice first in another or get someone who can do the work for you. And yes, you should be concerned about the ohms "(the correct term in this case is the "resistance"). If you are a guitar has single coil pickups in it, then you will want a 250k ohm. With humbuckers, you'll use-500K ohms 330 (with "k", ie 1000, so that 500,000 ohms). Pots come in two tapers, linear and logarithmic. Registration is also informally candles called cone of audio, so use one of them. You will also have to worry that the pot is physically fit on the guitar. The come in many different diameters and shaft lengths. If the pitch if the boat is not present, then the condenser acute bleeding (which runs all this) is probably also missing. Different guitars use very different values of the caps. The higher the value of the lid, the darker the sound becomes when you turn the pot. Les Pauls are using a 0.47uF (micro Farad) top ceramic disc. Personally, I usually change where one or 0.27uF, 0.33uF depending on the pickups in the guitar (highly interactive). Wiring diagrams can be www.seymourduncan.com find. This should help you along. DiMarzio does not make pots, bought at an electronics manufacturer and have private labeled. The best pots out there are CTS and BOURNS, but they're getting hard to find now. Good luck. Greetings from Austin, TX, Ken
